Thanksgiving

In September 1620 around 100 people left England on a ship. They landed in the USA. After almost 10 weeks of storm they were finally on dry land!
These people were called the Pilgrim Fathers, they moved because they had a bad time in England. It was because of their religion. Now they came to the USA because they wanted to start a new life. But the Pilgrims hadn't been practical. They packed things like a drum, a trumpet and 126 pairs of shoes. No one brought cows, horses or fishing lines.
Even though they were almost 100 people, no one of them had ever hunted an animal.
When the cold winter came many of them became sick and died. In April 1621 only 54 pilgrims were still alive.
But then they met some Indians. They became friends and and the Indians taught them how to grow crops and catch wild birds, like turkeys.
In the autumn the same year, the pilgrims had their first Thanksgiving party together with their Indians friends. They ate food they had grown on their own, and wild turkey. They were very thankful, they survived. They had a home.
